    Taipei, Taiwan, November 5, 2014 — Time synchronization is increasingly important for distributed systems in industrial automation. To meet this need, Moxa has implemented the latest PTP (Precision Time Protocol) technology in their new line of EDS-405A-PTP switches. The switches support the IEEE 1588v2 real-time clock, which is required to synchronize the clocks of all connected devices to sub-microsecond accuracy.

    The EDS-405A-PTP is a 5-port IEEE 1588v2 PTP switch designed for real-time factory automation, process control, and motor control applications. When the EDS-405A-PTP is configured as a boundary clock, the switch can act as a slave related to the grandmaster clock, and simultaneously act as a master clock related to its local slaves. The managed switch uses nanosecond-accurate time stamps to modify its timing packets and synchronize clocks distributed over the network. This PTP switch can also act as a transparent switch that measures the residence time of PTP packets and modify the time stamps to improve synchronization accuracy. The EDS-405A-PTP not only eliminates the master clock’s processing load, real-time synchronization also minimizes delays and disruptions to support precision control of robotic systems, now commonly used as part of advanced manufacturing applications.

    The EDS-405A-PTP industrial Ethernet switch also supports Modbus TCP, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP protocols for easy SCADA/PLC management and monitoring, and features a fast boot up time of less than 10 seconds, and fast network recovery within 20 ms with a full load of 250 switches.     We now extend our product range to new market segments. Applying new concepts from design to manufacturing, the PIANO series offers reliability, service life-time and efficiency figures usually available only in more expensive products.

    The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) figures of the PIANO-Series are as high as 1.5 million hours and the minimum service life-time is typically 40,000 hours. Efficiency figures vary, depending on the version, from 90.5% up to 94.5%. The 240W version consumes a width of only 49mm on the DIN-Rail, therefore it offers the same size benefit as the newest and most costly products from other vendors.

    Robust even for demanding applications, these purely convection cooled units can operate from -10°C (some units even from -25°C) up to +70°C. Power derating is typically only required above +55°C. The PIANO series is easy to use because it clicks smoothly onto any standard DIN-Rail and includes large-sized terminals which makes wiring simple and effortless. Furthermore, the PIANO series also offers a DC-OK signal that can be used to monitor the unit’s output voltage.

  • Protection against humidity and corrosive environments

    X20 controllers and modules handle all environmental conditions

    With the X20c series, B&R is setting new standards for protection against harsh environmental conditions. The “coated” variants of the compact controller and I/O modules are protected against condensation and corrosive gases by a special coating on the electronics module. This makes these modules suitable for use in corrosive environmental conditions.

    The coating on the electronics module protects the components and circuit board from the effects of condensation and corrosive gases. The effectiveness of protection against condensation is checked using the test specified in BMW GS 95011-4, and protection against corrosive gases using the 4-part corrosive gas tests specified in EN 60068-2-60, test method 4. The tests are carried out in a fully accredited in-house testing laboratory and in certified external testing facilities. B&R places even higher demands on the modules than what is specified in the standards and also subjects equipment to additional, more stringent testing.
